EPISODE 8 (50) JOKER - using your brilliant sense of humour to build success at work
Is your sense of humour an asset at work, or could it be a complete turn off?
This week Andrew takes a closer look at how best to use your natural sense of humour to build your reputation and make sure it doesn't undermine it.
Research shows that most people credit themselves with a good sense of humour. They can't all be correct? The evidence says Andrew suggests not.
He points to the many "isms" that soil otherwise well-intentioned humour. These include sexism, ageism, racism, weightism, mental healthism and more.
These and others, such as targeting less confident colleagues, nationality, and physical appearance do damage. Not only to those on the receiving end but to those jokers themselves.
It all comes down to whether people feel safe around you, and you may be last person to realise that they don't.
One amusing piece of information Andrew offers in this Podcast concerns the physical benefits that a good laugh can create. It seems a really good laugh might mean you could spend a bit less time in the gym!
The benefits of having a good sense of humour at work stem not from telling jokes, but rather from your ability to stand back from problems and see the humour in what's happening.
Finally, Andrew highlights the importance of choosing the right moment to launch your humour and making sure that it won't cause harm.
He ends by reminding you that you can access the transcript of this and his other Podcasts at the 50Ways.site. You can also access the Forum to share your thoughts, questions and opinions on this and other topics with others interested in succeeding at work.
