In the opening scenario, we learn how Mike applies for a new job and thinks he's done well in the interview.
But to his horror, he receives a rejection letter and can't discover what went wrong. Later in a chance meeting with an old school friend who now works at the firm that rejected Mike, he learns what happened.
It seems that somehow his body language upset the head of the division who was on the interview panel.
Andrew then presents the three main questions that people at work seem to have about body language:
- “How can body language affect my work and “career prospects?”
- “What are the most important things I should know about body language?”
- “How can I improve my body language at work?”
Andrew explains that non-verbal communication is thought to achieve between 65 to 93 per cent greater impact than spoken words.
If you're wondering how your nonverbal behaviour can affect your career, Andrew lists six ways in which this can happen, including having a poker face behind which you hide your feelings. Or looking bored at work is a common failing of newcomers.
Finally, Andrew suggests three simple actions you can take immediately to improve your non-verbal signals. His final Takeaway is:
Take the nonverbal seriously. It will help you respond more appropriately to people and will increase your chances of success at work.
